Planning Tool: The green belt designation is a planning tool used by local planning authorities to guide development decisions and ensure that new development occurs within existing built-up areas, rather than expanding into the green belt.

Benefits: In addition to preventing urban sprawl, green belts can also provide opportunities for public recreation, improve air quality, and enhance the visual amenity of urban areas. 

Exceptions: While development on green belt land is generally discouraged, there are exceptions, and in some cases, development may be permitted if it can be demonstrated that it is necessary and that there are no other suitable sites available. 

Saving our green belt is crucial for preventing urban sprawl, protecting the countryside, preserving the character of historic towns, and encouraging urban regeneration, all while contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future.
